1. Mechanical Protection and Structural Support (Core Function)
This is the most fundamental and critical function of the casing.
Physical Protection: Shields the fragile internal cell components (positive and negative electrodes, separator, electrolyte) from external impacts, compression, punctures, and vibrations. Prevents internal short circuits caused by physical damage, which could trigger thermal runaway (fire or explosion).
Structural Strength: Provides rigidity and shape to the entire battery, enabling reliable mounting within devices. It withstands minor expansion pressures generated internally.
2. Explosion Prevention and Safe Pressure Relief (Critical Safety Function)
Under abusive conditions (e.g., overcharging, overheating), lithium batteries generate gases that cause rapid internal pressure buildup. The metal casing forms the foundation of this safety barrier.
Withstands Internal Pressure: Maintains integrity under normal pressure conditions.
Integrated Pressure Relief Mechanism: Modern lithium battery metal casings are typically designed with safety vents or score marks. When internal pressure exceeds safe thresholds, the pressure relief device activates in a predetermined location and manner, directionally releasing internal gas and pressure to prevent catastrophic battery explosion.
3. Barrier and Sealing
Environmental Isolation: Effectively prevents external contaminants like air, moisture, and dust from entering the battery. Moisture and oxygen react violently with the electrolyte, disrupting the battery chemistry and causing performance failure or hazards.
Sealing the Electrolyte: Securely contains the internal liquid or gel electrolyte to prevent leakage. Electrolyte is not only toxic and flammable, but battery failure occurs immediately if it dries out.
4. Thermal Management

Heat Dissipation: Batteries generate heat during charging and discharging. The metal casing helps evenly conduct internal heat to the outer surface, where it dissipates into the surrounding environment via convection and radiation, preventing localized overheating.
Heating: In applications like electric vehicles, the battery thermal management system may utilize the battery casing as a thermal interface to heat the battery in low-temperature environments, ensuring optimal operating temperature range.
5. Electrical Connections and Shielding (in some cases)
As an Electrode: For a common battery form factor—cylindrical cells (e.g., 18650)—the metal casing itself is typically used as the negative terminal current collector. This enables more efficient current collection and a more compact structure.
